We chose this topic off a list of possibilities we were given at the beginning of class. Our top two options were about the Holocaust and child labor; however, since we were basing the topic of the NHD theme of rights and responsibilities regarding US involvement, child labor seemed to be more fitting, since it was happening specifically in the US and it was a responsibility of the US government to fix the issue.
We conducted our research first beginning by defining child labor and what the circumstances meant. One of the first websites we came across had primary sources, pictures, which led us to researching some of the stories and interviews about the circumstances the children faced daily. Then, we researched examples of rights and responsibilities of children, of parents, and of the government. Some of these results were opinionated, but it left us with good ideas about different perspectives. We also researched statistical figures for this topic and people that were involved in helping to make a difference in this, at the time, controversial issue.
Our presentation category was an easy choice. We chose to do a website because it was something we were able to easily edit and make interesting. We have created websites for other projects as well, so we had background experience. A lot of the process spent building the website was just putting images/text/video in one spot to see how it looked, then moving it to a different spot. It was an add-as-you-go process. Our source note cards were a huge help in providing information for the section we were explaining in our website, and most of the information we found was helpful. We had to do a little more research while making the website to find videos that would be useful to add, but it did not take very long.
Our project related to the National History Day theme of Rights and Responsibilities because during the time, children’s rights were being violated, and in many cases, completely denied. It became the parent’s and government’s responsibility to stand up for the rights of the children. The children had an unreasonable amount of responsibility put on their shoulders to be at work on time, to do the job correctly, to be productive, and to be mature, at such a young age which affected their rights.

MEghan's process paper
For this National History Day project, my partner and I decided on the topic of child labor during the Industrial Revolution. We chose this topic because we felt that not very many people knew about the working conditions the children were put into inside the factories so we wanted to inform everyone about what happened during the Industrial Revolution and how it changed.
As we were assigned this project, we researched a lot online and learned about the Industrial Revolution and the child labor that went on during that time. We mainly used the internet for our research and all of the websites we have looked at are good and reliable sources that have plenty of in depth information that we can base our project off of. We continue to do research as we progress with our project and continue to learn more about child labor.
We chose to do a website for our project because we felt that people would be more interested in looking at our topic through a website rather than listening to a documentary or reading a paper. We think that a website is a more effective way to display an important topic considering how much the internet is used by so many people now a days. We started by laying out and creating a draft of how we would design our website, what information would go in it, and how we would make it look intriguing. Our finished website is interesting and we think it will catch people’s attention and they will actually look through it and learn about the horrible child labor that went on throughout the Industrial Revolution.
Child Labor relates to the NHD theme of Rights and Responsibilities because the children that were forced to work in the dangerous factories had rights to decide whether or not to work in the factory due to how unsafe the machines were and they had rights to how they were treated. The responsibilities relied on the adult employees and bosses at the factory to make sure that all children were safe while working and they were treated with respect just like any other adult worker. The rights of the children were not acknowledged at all and were cruelly taken away from them and the employees of the factories lacked the necessary responsibilities of keeping the children safe at all times. The rights of the children and responsibilities of the adults were not present during the Industrial Revolution which makes child labor compatible with the NHD theme.
